Rowan Delmirius
“What did you tell her?” I ask Demetria as soon as she’s back inside of our home.
“I told her what was acceptable for me to tell her. The rest, I’ll leave to you.” She says and if I wasn’t already dead I’d die all over again for what I’ve done.
“She will forgive you Rowan.” Demetria says , and my face must show all the tortured feelings on my face. Hate for my brother Magnus for daring to lay a single finger on Winter, and hate for myself for what his hand forced me to do before he could attempt it again himself.
“I’ll never forgive him.” I say. Wishing it didn’t have to be this way. Wishing I didn’t have a brother who was reckless and cruel enough to ruin my life. I didn’t care if he thought his sick plan would keep me alive and prevent me from draining her. Because he touched her. Drank her blood and made her drink his, he assaulted her. And there was no excuse for what he’d done. Nobody could ever convince me to forgive him.
“I know.” Demetria says softly.
“I want him gone.” I say and Demetria sighs.
“I mean it. It’s him or me.” I say and my sister frowns.
“I’m not agreeing with what he’s done Rowan, I’m not defending him-“
“It sounds like you are.” I snarl at her.
“We’re a family Rowan.” She pleads softly.
“He is no longer my family. And neither is anyone else who thinks what he tried to do is forgivable.” I say and quickly disappear to my bedroom.
The spell on the house was back in place , I couldn’t go to her. And I was honesty too ashamed to anyways. I’d claimed her. Without her truly knowing what it meant, or knowing what I’d done.
I sit on my bed , laying back, laying down in the dark. The sun rising outside and slowly peeking in through my windows.
I let myself feel the slow burn of the sun on my exposed skin. Laying there torturing myself , punishing myself for claiming Winter. I wince as I lay there. The sun slowly rising higher, my skin growing hotter, and it feels like flames are licking the exposed skin, my hands and forearms, my face , my feet.
“What the hell are you doing?!” my door flies open and Gideon storms in, a flash across the room and drawing the heavy drapes shut.
My skin automatically cools, still burning but adjusting to the now dark, I can smell the slight scent of my skin that had been about to burn as the sun almost peeked up over the trees.
“Leave me alone.” I say and Gideon snarls.
“I’ll do no such thing when you want to burn yourself to ash.” He snarls at me.
“Is that really what you think she’d want? For you to burn yourself into a pile of dust?!” He yells and I just lay there.
“No. But it’s what I deserve.” I say and he Gideon snarls.
“Enough. What’s done is done.” Gideon says and I whip my head to him and snarl.
“How dare you be so blasé about this!” I yell , immediately in front of his face. Snarling an inch from his face.
“And how dare YOU be so melodramatic” he snarls.
“You think now is the time to wallow? To lay here in bed and let the sun drown you in further misery? Get ahold of yourself!” He scolds me like I’m a child.
“I CLAIMED HER!” I growl.
“I know what you’ve done!” He hisses. “And it’s been done! You made a choice. So deal with it.” He growls.
“A CHOICE I SHOULDNT HAVE HAD TO MAKE!” I yell at him.
“I’m not uncaring about what Magnus tried to do or what decision you had to make in result of it. But like I said. What’s done is done. And we need to act. Now.” He growls.
“She has choices.” He says and I glare at him.
“You’d have me kill my own child?” I snarl. Because that’s the part Demetria didn’t tell Winter. There was more to the claiming that just protection from others feeding on her or touching her.
“I’d have you do nothing. I’d have her be given the choice.” He says and my fangs snap.
“There’s no choice.” I snarl.
Gideon just looks at me and shakes his head.
“You’ll tell her. And you’ll tell her of her choices.” He says.
“No.” I say and his eyes flare.
“Then Demetria will.” He says. “One of us will.”
“NO.” I growl.
“I’ll give you till noon to decide if you will tell her or one of us will.” He says and then he’s gone.
————-
“Rowan.” Winter falls into my arms hours later , Demetrias glamor lifted to allow her to return to the house. Everyone but Magnus is in the entryway to monitor us.
He arms wrap around my neck and her mouth crashes to mine and I groan. My hands on her face and my tongue parting her lips, my hands slipping into her hair as my cock goes stiff and she pushes onto her toes. Making my hands drop and grab her ass and lift her , her legs wrapping around me. Neither of us caring about our audience.
“I love you” she breathes and I feel a pain at her words. Wondering if this will be the first and the last time I hear them.
“I love you” I groan in return. Her mouth all over mine as she breathes hard and whimpers and kisses down my neck and licks my skin and bites her teeth into my flesh and I my eyes roll back.
Several throats clear and it doesn’t stop her , she licks the spot and to my ear.
“Take me to your room Rowan” she moans and I wish I could. I wish I could have this last time with her , because I’m not so sure she’ll forgive me for what I’ve done without her knowledge. Demetria thinks so. But I’m not sure at all.
“We need to talk” I groan and she whispers to me with a desperate moan.
“Let’s talk later. I need you, now” she moans and kisses me and nips my lip and I grab her ass harder and look to the side. All eyes on me with judgmental stares. They know what I want. That I want to take her upstairs and make love to her incase this is the last time. But there’s no time. Every second matters depending upon the choice she makes.
“You need to hear what I have to tell you Winter” I say.
“I don’t care what you have to say, Demetria told me, and I don’t care, I want to be yours, I want you to own me Rowan, I’m not mad, I love you, I love you so much” she whimpers and kisses me.
“Please, take me to bed, make love to me” she pleads.
“I fucking need you” she whines.
“No!” She cries and she glares at Demetria as her arms drop from my neck and I let her down and she steps away.
“No. Stop!” She shrieks.
“We need to talk. You need to listen.” Gideon tells her and Winter looks at me.
“Make her stop!” Winter cries.
“Make her let me hold you!” She pleads as she takes a few more steps back.
“STOP!” She screams. “STOP FUCKING WITH MY HEAD!”
“That’s enough.” I tell Demetria, unable to stand the sadness ok Winters face, the fear and the violation of her mind being controlled again.
Gideon sighs and nods. Winter gasps with relief as she runs back to me and crashes herself into me, wrapping her arms around me so tight, as if she has the power told hold to me no matter what mind control Demetria uses on her.
I hold her , one arm around her. The other on her head as I kiss the top of her head.
“There’s something I need to tell you. It’s important.” I tell her.
She looks up at me and nods. “Okay, just, don’t let them get in my mind anymore. I…not after…not after what he did.” She cries.
I look at Demetria. “No more glamour. Ever. Not with her. None of you.” I snarl at them.
Gideon nods. Understanding.
“Suit yourself.” Demetria says with a single nod and slow blink , severing her control over Winter.
Winter takes a shaky breath, surely feeling her mind be freed and she glares at Demetria. Demetria just shrugs with a soft smile.
“You’re free. No need for scowls.” She says and Winter clenches her jaw.
I grab Winters hand.
“Sit. I need to talk to you.” I say and walk her into the large family room area , warm lips making the room glow as I sit with her on the love seat. The others sitting on the sectional or on the chaise or other seats in the room.
“Does…everyone need to be here?” She whispers.
I nod.
“It’s for your safety.” Gideon says and Winter looks at him. At everyone. Then back to me.
“The claiming is more than what Demetria told you.” I say and Winter just nods as I take her hands and looks at her soft hands in mine. My thumbs brushing over her knuckles and the backs of her hands slowly.
“Okay” she says softly. “What…else is there?”
I can’t even meet her eyes. She’s going to hate me. She’s going to belong to me but won’t truly be mine when she refuses to ever speak to me ever again.
“There’s a reason the claiming is mostly only ever done after marriage to a human. It more than a commitment to me Winter. It’s more than just belonging to only me.” I say.
“Okay.” She says and blinks and turns her hands and she’s the one grabbing mine instead and I lift my eyes to hers. So soft. So concerned. So perfect. Would she ever look at me this way again?
“What is it?” She says softly.
“I….i shouldn’t have claimed you without telling you first….there was just….there was no time…I was scared…of what Magnus had almost done. I didn’t want anyone else to have the opportunity to claim you.” I say and she squeezes my hands.
“Rowan, what? What is it? What should you have told me?” She asks.
I take a pause and look around the room and my entire family nods. Letting me know I need to do this. And I know I do. But it’s too hard. And I’m terrified it will be something unforgivable to her.
“Rowan” she whispers. “Nothing you could say would change the way I feel about you. Nothing. Tell me.” She says and those words hurts even more.
“You don’t know that.” I say quietly.
“I do. I love you, nothing changes that. Ever.” She says and I look at her.
“Rowan.” Gideon says my name as a warning.
“I know.” I say with defeat. Knowing I have to tell her.
“The claiming is usually done on a wedding night because…there’s no way to undo it. What the claiming does is….” I pause. Not sure how to fucking say what I need to say.
She squeezes my hands and I look her in the eyes and suddenly I can’t keep it in, can’t keep her hanging or worried a second longer. It comes out , I blurt it without pause.
“The claiming forced conception.” I say.
She blinks and her head shakes.
“Conception ? Of what?” She asks and I feel her hands starting to shake. “Conception of what Rowan?”
I look at her. Wondering if she really needs me to say it.
“A baby.” I say almost to quietly.
I wince as her hands yank from mine and she sucks in a hard breath.
“What?” She exhales harshly and pushes away from me slightly.
“No” she shakes her head. “I can’t” she laughs slightly. “Rowan I’m on birth control and there’s…vampires can’t …with humans…right?” She asks her chest rising and falling rapidly with panic.
“The claiming forces conception. Whether or not you’re on a contraceptive.” I say and she shakes her head.
“But I’m…I’m human.” She says.
“It’s …it doesn’t matter.” I say.
She blinks and stares off at nothing.
“You….im….im going to be pregnant?” She asks and I nod.
There’s several beats of silence and the she shoves off the couch. Standing and glaring at me.
“AND YOU DONT THINK I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BEFORE HAND?!” She yells and I wince.
“I do. There wasn’t time Winter. It was a selfish choice. But I couldn’t risk him trying it again. I couldn’t risk anyone else claiming you!” I plead with her to understand.
“IM PREGNANT ?!” She screams hysterically and hands grasping her stomach.
“Winter, calm-“ Demetria starts.
“DONT YOU DARE TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!” She snaps at Demetria. Everyone hissing at the rage behind Winters glare at my sister.
Winter turns to me and I see it coming. I could stop it. But I don’t. Her hand cracks across my face.
Several hisses sound and Gideon raises his hand to them to keep them from reacting.
“You ..bastard” she cries through her teeth.
“I’m sorry” I say and look at her and her hand cracks across my face again.
“FUCK YOU!” She cries.
“Winter.” Gideon says. She shakes her head and looks at me unable to believe it. And I don’t blame her. I deserve as many slaps as she wants to give me. I deserve her anger and the look of betrayal on her face.
“Is a child with him THAT bad?” Demetria asks and Winters eyes flare.
“SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!” Winter yells and Gideon moves and is in front of her before any of them can react. Winter stumbles back and I shoot up and put myself between her and Gideon.
“It’s in your best interest to watch the way you speak to the vampires who have saved you numerous times now.”
“Do NOT threaten her.” I growl at Gideon and then turn to Winter.
“There’s more you need to know.” I say and her eyes widen.
“WHAT MORE COULD THERE POSSIBLY BE?!” She shrieks with distress. Nearly collapsing and I grab her and sit her back on the couch as she cries.
“We have. Options. And you’ll be the one to make the choice. It’s up to you. I won’t …force you to do anything.”
“No. You’ll just force a fucking baby into me without my consent!” She yells and I hang my head.
“Would you rather Magnus had done it?!” Elena. His wife yells at Winter and Winter whips her head.
“Your husband is a fucking monster.” Winter snarls and Elena seethes.
“Winter” I call her name and she looks at me and she has tears in her eyes but the angriest look I’ve ever seen on her face.
“If you don’t want to have this baby. Then you can still…there’s still time to…” I can’t even say the words. Because I don’t want her to make that choice. As much as I hate that I’ve done this without talking to her first is bad enough. But to know my only chance at having a child with her is this one. I want it so bad.
“What? Fucking kill it?! You’d get me pregnant and then make me a murderer?!” She yells at me. I shouldn’t feel as relieved to her reaction as I do. But knowing she’s clearly against the option of terminating it gives me relief I don’t deserve.
“No. I don’t want that. I’m just telling you your options.” I say.
“I’m a woman. I know my fucking options.” She seethes.
“You don’t. Not all of them.” I say and she glares at me.
“If we keep it…..it will….”
“It will be born human …” I say.
She looks at me shaking her head. Sensing the rest.
“But once they’re eighteen….they will automatically turn unless they are turned sooner.” I say and her face goes pale, white as snow.
“They’ll outlive you.” I tell her.
“Unless you turn her.” Demetria says and snarl at her over my shoulder.
Tears rip down Winters cheeks.
“You don’t have to have the baby.” I remind her.
Her brows pinch and her jaw tightens.
“You will turn me.” She says.
I shake my head. “I can’t do that.”
“You can. And you will.” She says as if she had the power to make me.
“I told you. No matter what. I will not turn you.”
“So you’d fuck your child into me , knowing it gets to live with you forever , just not ME?!” She yells.
“Winter , I don’t want to-“
“I really don’t fucking care what you want Rowan. Just like you didn’t care what I might want when you fucking put a fucking baby inside of me!” She yells.
“I don’t care what your reasons are for not wanting to turn me! It’s MY life! And you don’t get to fucking live the rest of your fucking days with OUR child WITHOUT me!” She yells at me.
“We’re filing for the turn. Today. You WILL fucking turn me.” She seethes.
“I’m not turning you.” I say.
“YES YOU ARE!” She screams and her voice breaks.
“Tell her the rest.” Demetria says.
“There’s MORE?!?!” Winter shrieks.
“If you…we have to…if we’re keeping it….we need to get married. Today.”
“WHAT?!” She screams.
“The pregnancy won’t hold if you’re not married before sunset. The claiming is done after a wedding for a reason.” Demetria explains when I grow too ashamed to explain it all.
“So…it would just…so if it doesn’t even hold …then why …” Winter stammers trying to find words. I know what she’s wondering. If the pregnancy just “dissolves” why wouldn’t we just let it? Why even tell her and not just let it dissolve without her knowing. Save all of us the trouble of sitting here.
“Rowan is the only one who is capable of getting you pregnant now that the claiming has been done, no mortal or immortal man can make you with child.” Demetria says.
“And…..this is the only chance you and Rowan will have to conceive. If you are not married by sunset, the pregnancy will not hold. And you’ll never be able to conceive again. The claiming is allowed only once. And The chances of you getting pregnant with another baby by Rowan , and nearly impossible. And If you are turned , it is entirely impossible. “ Demetria clarifies.
Winter just sits there and listens and cries harder.
“I’m sorry.” I say. “You don’t have to-“
“Don’t talk.” Winter says and shakes her head.
“Don’t talk to me.” She says and stands and I feel tears in my eyes as she stands and walks through the room and everyone watches her leave. I close my eyes and blood drips down my cheeks as the front door shuts.
“I’ll talk to her.” Demetria says and I shake my head.
“Don’t.” I say and look at the archway she walked out of.
“Let her decide on her own.” I say softly.
