Winter Windsor
The wind whips loose strands of hair at my face, my nose cold from the bite of the winter air as I stand on a ladder fidgeting with the string of Christmas lights.
"Damnit" I hiss when the lights I just clipped to the gutter come lose again.
"Told you to not bother" My sister Willa says standing across the yard, watching from the driveway, bundled in her winter coat and scarf and chunky knit gloves, holding a paper cup of hot coffee.
I growl to myself as I stare down the string of lights, internally threatening the inanimate wires, making death threats to them in my head if they don't cooperate.
My sister clears her throat. It takes a second for me to register the tone of it, and when I do. I freeze, and there's more than just the cold air of the wind biting at my neck and face. I can feel HIS eyes on me.
I turn my head, looking over my shoulder, across the street, slightly diagonal to our own house, lies the Delmirius house. He's standing outside, in dark black jeans, and a short sleeved shirt that clings to his biceps as his arms are crossed over his chest, his head slightly cocked as if he'd never seen a mortal human being decorate their fucking house for Christmas.
I can't help the narrowing of my eyes, the way my lips tighten as I stare back at him.
Rowan Delmirius. Neighbor. Vampire. And hotter than Hades itself I'm sure. It's not that I didn't like Vampires. I wasn't a fucking bigot. I just didn't like HIM.
My sister Willa and I moved here two years ago, with our parents when I was eighteeen. Bloodwood , while the name itself was a bit ominous, was actually one of the safest neighborhoods to live in. It also was home to some of the most famous vampire families. The Delmirius family was one of them.
In two years, I've spoken to every Delmirius vampire several times, and have only excahnged mere words with Rowan Delmirius. He was a tall dark broody son of a bitch and it infuriated me because he was absolutely every vampire book reading womans wet dream. He was the last Delmirius son "on the market" , and mortals and vampire women threw themselves at him for a shot. Well not me. Fuck that. I wouldn't become someones fucking blood bag.
I feel my nose twitch with a scowl, and my nostrils flare as I can see the fucking slight lift of one side of his face. I huff, and roll my eyes and turn back to my fucking project as I stew in my hatred for him.
Maybe the hatred, had slightly to do with the fact that he treated me like I was the plague. Then other times, he just...fucking..stared. After two years, it was grating on my god damn nerves and I hear my sister giggle and I shoot her a look.
"Shut up." I hiss and she bites back her laughter.
"I didn't say anything." she says innocently with a shrug.
Willa, had a theory. That Rowan liked me. Bullshit. Absolute bullshit. He just enjoyed being an immortal prick, and ignoring me whenever I attempted civility, and then just gawking like a psycho the other half of the time. JUST so he could get under my skin.
I knew he could fucking hear me if I spoke. He could hear everything and anything and could probably hear my fucking blood boiling from across the street.
"I don't know why the fuck he always has to stare like a fucking creep." I bite out and Willa's eyes pop open and her mouth falls open partly.
"Winter!" she scolds me.
"What?" I say and slam my hand to the gutter and force the wire into the little clip. "He needs to mind his own fucking business, I don't know why he needs to stand there and watch like a fucking PSYCHOOOO" I call out the last word loudly, making damn sure he hears me.
"Don't know why he's standing there wat-"
I shriek. So does Willa. As my rage and jerky movements cause me to not pay attention to my footing and the ladder slips, and air wooshes from my lungs as I fall, my eyes squeezing shut as I brace for the fucking impact of hitting the hard ground, and just praying I don't break a fucking bone, or my god damn neck.
I land. My eyes pop open immediately and instead of busting my ass on the frozen ground, I'm sitting like a fucking bride in Rowan's arms, a hard scowl on his face and his normally dark brown eyes, are bright gold. I blink several times, my mouth opening to say something, but I've never seen his eyes this close, not ever, and not when they're like that. Like honey, bright, sparkling, glowing honey. I blink again.
"Be more careful...Winter." He says his voice sounding dark, sounding angry. He drops his one hand holding my legs to let me stand,my hands go to his chest, and I can't look away from his eyes, they're just....so....his eyes go back to their brooding brown in an instant, and just like that my trance is broken and I shake my head and scowl.
"I was being careful." I snap.
His brows lift. "Really? Is that why I just saved you from breaking your neck? Because you were being careful?"
I cross my arms. This amuses him. That little pull at the corner of his lips happens again.
"Maybe, If I wasnt being STALKED by my neighbor I wouldnt have been distracted and-"
He laughs. Throwing me off my little tirade. I swallow because his teeth are so white, so perfect, and where his fangs would be if he retracted them, the teeth are still pointed even now, just ever so slightly. His smile was just as hot as the rest of him, and his laugh.
He leans forward and brings his mouth to my ear, freezing me in place, and he's never been so close, and I shiver, from the cold, from the proximity of having a vampires fucking mouth inches from my neck.
"I was under the impression you like it when I stare Winter." he whispers.
"Is that not why you leave your curtain open at night?" he whispers, and I feel heat in my cheeks.
"Just that little crack....that little sliver of invitation...showing yourself off for me?" he whispers.
"The little blue nightie?" he whispers. "That one is my favorite."
I swallow so loud and he chuckles quietly.
"Yes...you LOVE it when I stare...naughty girl." he says, and pulls back, my mouth gaping as he just smirks. Looks to Willa. Nods and then disappears too fast , and I just see a blur him as the front door of his house closes.
"holy....shit." Willa says.
I just stand there. Blinking at the house across the street.
"Yeah, he is TOTALLY gonna give it to you hard." Willa says and her colorful comment, brings me back to earth and I hiss at her.
"Willa!" I whisper yell.
She shrugs.
"He can hear you!" I remind her.
"So what...that man totally wants to rearrange your guts." she says, leaving me slack jawed.
"You are NOT my sister. I am disowning you." I glare at her.
She smiles. "Mhmm, sure you are. C'mon, it's cold as fuck out here, and you almost just died, so...enough for today." she says and I grumble. My head turning upward to the gutter where a strand of lights is hanging and the clip that kept giving me trouble, drops the wire again.
"Fucking lights!" I say and kick the metal ladder at my feet.
Willa laughs and I scowl at her.
"C'mon, let's go watch some trash television and pretend like hot neighbor vamp doesnt want to screw your brains out." she says.
"I'm going to murder you." I grit my teeth at my sister and she giggles.
"Please don't, I'm far too beautiful to die." She bats her lashes and I roll my eyes.
"I hate you." I say to my absolutely stunning sister.
"Mhhmm, love you too" she smiles and I turn and walk towards her, following her into the house. Before entering the garage, I turn, looking to the house across the street. Seeing Rowan in his bedroom window on the third floor.
I lift a hand , pulling off my glove, to make sure he sees it as I thrust my hand into the air, and give him the middle finger.
